And DavidH1732 numberedH6485 the peopleH5971 that were with him, and setH7760 captainsH8269 of thousands,H505 and captainsH8269 of hundredsH3967 overH5921 them.
2
And DavidH1732 sentH7971 forth a thirdH7992 part of the peopleH5971 under the handH3027 of Joab,H3097 and a thirdH7992 part under the handH3027 of AbishaiH52 the sonH1121 of Zeruiah,H6870 Joab'sH3097 brother,H251 and a thirdH7992 part under the handH3027 of IttaiH863 the Gittite.H1663 And the kingH4428 saidH559 to the people,H5971 I will surely goH3318 forthH3318 with you myselfH589 also.H1571
3
But the peopleH5971 answered,H559 You shall not goH3318 forth:H3318 for ifH518 we fleeH5127 away, they will not careH7760 H3820 for us; neitherH518 ifH518 halfH2677 of us die,H4191 will they careH7760 H3820 for us: but nowH6258 you are worthH3644 tenH6235 thousandH505 of us: therefore nowH6258 it is betterH2896 that you succorH5826 us out of the city.H5892
4
And the kingH4428 saidH559 to them, WhatH834 seemsH5869 you bestH3190 I will do.H6213 And the kingH4428 stoodH5975 by the gateH8179 side,H3027 and allH3605 the peopleH5971 cameH3318 out by hundredsH3967 and by thousands.H505
5
And the kingH4428 commandedH6680 JoabH3097 and AbishaiH52 and Ittai,H863 saying,H559 Deal gentlyH3814 for my sake with the youngH5288 man, even with Absalom.H53 And allH3605 the peopleH5971 heardH8085 when the kingH4428 gave allH3605 the captainsH8269 chargeH6680 concerningH5921 H1697 Absalom.H53
6
So the peopleH5971 wentH3318 out into the fieldH7704 againstH7125 Israel:H3478 and the battleH4421 was in the woodH3293 of Ephraim;H669
7
WhereH8033 the peopleH5971 of IsraelH3478 were slainH5062 beforeH6440 the servantsH5650 of David,H1732 and thereH8033 was there a greatH1419 slaughterH4046 that dayH3117 of twentyH6242 thousandH505 men.
8
For the battleH4421 was thereH8033 scatteredH6327 overH5921 the faceH6440 of allH3605 the country:H776 and the woodH3293 devouredH398 moreH7235 peopleH5971 that dayH3117 thanH834 the swordH2719 devoured.H398
9
And AbsalomH53 metH7122 the servantsH5650 of David.H1732 And AbsalomH53 rodeH7392 on a mule,H6505 and the muleH6505 wentH935 underH8478 the thick boughsH7730 of a greatH1419 oak,H424 and his headH7218 caughtH2388 holdH2388 of the oak,H424 and he was takenH5414 up betweenH996 the heavenH8064 and the earth;H776 and the muleH6505 that was underH8478 him wentH5674 away.
10
And a certainH259 manH376 sawH7200 it, and toldH5046 Joab,H3097 and said,H559 Behold,H2009 I sawH7200 AbsalomH53 hangedH8518 in an oak.H424
11
And JoabH3097 saidH559 to the manH376 that toldH5046 him, And, behold,H2009 you sawH7200 him, and whyH4069 did you not smiteH5221 him thereH8033 to the ground?H776 and I would have givenH5414 you tenH6235 shekels of silver,H3701 and a girdle.H2290
12
And the manH376 saidH559 to Joab,H3097 ThoughH3863 I should receiveH8254 a thousandH505 shekels of silverH3701 in my hand,H3027 yet would I not putH7971 forthH7971 my handH3027 againstH413 the king'sH4428 son:H1121 for in our hearingH241 the kingH4428 chargedH6680 you and AbishaiH52 and Ittai,H863 saying,H559 BewareH8104 that none touch the youngH5288 man Absalom.H53
13
OtherwiseH176 I should have workedH6213 falsehoodH8267 against my own life:H5315 for there is noH3808 matterH1697 hidH3582 from the king,H4428 and you yourselfH859 would have setH3320 yourself againstH5048 me.
14
Then saidH559 Joab,H3097 I may not tarryH3176 thusH3651 with you. And he tookH3947 threeH7969 dartsH7626 in his hand,H3709 and thrustH8628 them through the heartH3820 of Absalom,H53 whileH5750 he was yet aliveH2416 in the middleH3820 of the oak.H424
15
And tenH6235 youngH5288 men that boreH5375 Joab'sH3097 armorH3627 compassedH5437 aboutH5437 and smoteH5221 Absalom,H53 and slewH4191 him.
16
And JoabH3097 blewH8628 the trumpet,H7782 and the peopleH5971 returnedH7725 from pursuingH7291 afterH310 Israel:H3478 for JoabH3097 heldH2820 backH2820 the people.H5971
17
And they tookH3947 Absalom,H53 and castH7993 him intoH413 a greatH1419 pitH6354 in the wood,H3293 and laidH5324 a veryH3966 greatH1419 heapH1530 of stonesH68 on him: and allH3605 IsraelH3478 fledH5127 everyH376 oneH376 to his tent.H168
18
Now AbsalomH53 in his lifetimeH2416 had takenH3947 and rearedH5324 up for himself a pillar,H4678 whichH834 is in the king'sH4428 dale:H6010 for he said,H559 I have noH369 sonH1121 to keep my nameH8034 in remembrance:H2142 and he calledH7121 the pillarH4678 afterH5921 his own name:H8034 and it is calledH7121 to thisH2088 day,H3117 Absalom'sH53 place.H3027
19
Then saidH559 AhimaazH290 the sonH1121 of Zadok,H6659 Let me nowH4994 run,H7323 and bearH1319 the kingH4428 tidings,H1319 how that the LORDH3068 has avengedH8199 him of his enemies.H341
20
And JoabH3097 saidH559 to him, You shall not bearH1319 tidingsH1309 thisH2088 day,H3117 but you shall bearH1319 tidingsH1319 anotherH312 day:H3117 but thisH2088 dayH3117 you shall bearH1319 noH3808 tidings,H1319 becauseH3588 H5921 the king'sH4428 sonH1121 is dead.H4191
21
Then saidH559 JoabH3097 to Cushi,H3569 GoH3212 tellH5046 the kingH4428 whatH834 you have seen.H7200 And CushiH3569 bowedH7812 himself to Joab,H3097 and ran.H7323
22
Then saidH559 AhimaazH290 the sonH1121 of ZadokH6659 yetH5750 againH3254 to Joab,H3097 But howsoever,H1961 H4101 let me, I prayH4994 you, alsoH1571 runH7323 afterH310 Cushi.H3569 And JoabH3097 said,H559 WhyH4100 H2088 will you run,H7323 my son,H1121 seeing that you have noH369 tidingsH1309 ready?H4672
23
But howsoever, said he, let me run.H7323 And he saidH559 to him, Run.H7323 Then AhimaazH290 ranH7323 by the wayH1870 of the plain,H3603 and overranH5674 Cushi.H3569
24
And DavidH1732 satH3427 betweenH996 the twoH8147 gates:H8179 and the watchmanH6822 wentH3212 up to the roofH1406 overH413 the gateH8179 to the wall,H2346 and liftedH5375 up his eyes,H5869 and looked,H7200 and beholdH2009 a manH376 runningH7323 alone.H905
25
And the watchmanH6822 cried,H7121 and toldH5046 the king.H4428 And the kingH4428 said,H559 IfH518 he be alone,H905 there is tidingsH1309 in his mouth.H6310 And he cameH3212 apace, and drew near.H7126
26
And the watchmanH6822 sawH7200 anotherH312 manH376 running:H7323 and the watchmanH6822 calledH7121 to the porter,H7778 and said,H559 BeholdH2009 another manH376 runningH7323 alone.H905 And the kingH4428 said,H559 He alsoH1571 bringsH1319 tidings.H1319
27
And the watchmanH6822 said,H559 Me thinksH7200 the runningH4794 of the foremostH7223 is like the runningH4794 of AhimaazH290 the sonH1121 of Zadok.H6659 And the kingH4428 said,H559 He is a goodH2896 man,H376 and comesH935 with goodH2896 tidings.H1309
28
And AhimaazH290 called,H7121 and saidH559 to the king,H4428 All is well.H7965 And he fellH7812 downH7812 to the earthH776 on his faceH639 before the king,H4428 and said,H559 BlessedH1288 be the LORDH3068 your God,H430 whichH834 has deliveredH5462 up the menH582 that liftedH5375 up their handH3027 against my lordH113 the king.H4428
29
And the kingH4428 said,H559 Is the youngH5288 man AbsalomH53 safe?H7965 And AhimaazH290 answered,H559 When JoabH3097 sentH7971 the king'sH4428 servant,H5650 and me your servant,H5650 I sawH7200 a greatH1419 tumult,H1995 but I knewH3045 not whatH4100 it was.
30
And the kingH4428 saidH559 to him, TurnH5437 aside,H5437 and standH3320 here.H3541 And he turnedH5437 aside,H5437 and stoodH5975 still.
31
And, behold,H2009 CushiH3569 came;H935 and CushiH3569 said,H559 Tidings,H1319 my lordH113 the king:H4428 for the LORDH3068 has avengedH8199 you this dayH3117 of allH3605 them that roseH6965 up againstH5921 you.
32
And the kingH4428 saidH559 to Cushi,H3569 Is the youngH5288 man AbsalomH53 safe?H7965 And CushiH3569 answered,H559 The enemiesH341 of my lordH113 the king,H4428 and allH3605 that riseH6965 againstH5921 you to do you hurt,H7451 be as that youngH5288 man is.
33
And the kingH4428 was much moved,H7264 and wentH5927 up to the chamberH5944 overH5921 the gate,H8179 and wept:H1058 and as he went,H3212 thusH3541 he said,H559 O my sonH1121 Absalom,H53 my son,H1121 my sonH1121 Absalom!H53 wouldH4310 H5414 God I had diedH4191 for you, O Absalom,H53 my son,H1121 my son!H1121
